Arthur Guinness started brewing his legendary ales at St. James's Gate in Dublin in 1759, fast forward a mere 264 years and here I am enjoying a perfect pint of the black stuff in Conor’s Bar, Castle Leslie in County Monaghan, Ireland’s ancient east.

Not just any bar, but perhaps one of the most iconic bars in Ireland, maybe even the world?

I say that without much fear of rebuke, as back in June 2002 Paul McCartney a former member of the most successful rock band in history tied the knot here with model Heather Mills, and I am glad to say that, unlike that marriage, Castle Leslie has gone from strength to strength.

The tables in Conor’s Bar, like everything else, are rather special. In fact, they look at first glance more like display cabinets in a museum or auctioneers showroom and certainly not somewhere you pop down your freshly pulled pint of Guinness.

Filled with antique cutlery these are indeed tables. I felt rather uncomfortable putting my glass directly on top of these rather precious dining utensils, so I went back to the bar and grabbed a few napkins to act as a temporary mat. Then I though, picture…there’s a picture here and 10 minutes later the delightfully named Poppy, one of the staff, was critiquing my images and seemed to approve particularly of the Guinness shot.

Another beautiful day in Ireland and I have to say the Guinness was sublime!
